Lost scenes

Bill and James Keach in ParisLarry and Gray in Paris

There was a scene scripted in which Larry and Gray spend a night out in Paris before moving on to the front as Ambulance Drivers.

The scene looks at the love triangle that exists between the two of them and Isabel.

Larry and Gray come out the door of a NOISY NIGHTCLUB. They look dashing in tuxedos. Larry carries a bottle of wine. They're pretty loaded.

LARRY
Where to now?

GRAY
I don't know. I think we've already closed every place.

LARRY
Let's take a break. Step into my office.

They sit down on the curb. Gray produces a couple of glasses from the pockets of his tux. They watch a PARISIAN COUPLE necking torridly in the doorway across the street. Larry pours. A POLICEMAN strolls by. Larry offers him a glass of wine. The cop tosses it back, nods, and continues his beat.

LARRY
I love this town. They're all animals.
(refills glass)
What'll we drink to? GRAY
I don't know. Isabel.

LARRY
Isabel.

They toast. Larry looks at him. He hiccoughs.

LARRY
You're in love with her, aren't you? You've
always been in love with her.

GRAY
What's it to you?

LARRY
Nothing.

Gray adjusts his bow tie, drunkenly.

GRAY
I would never, ever, in a million years attempt
to lay one finger on your girl.

LARRY
You are the most highly principalled man I
have ever met.

GRAY
Thank you. Except of course for that one insignificant little incident at Ginny Malmquist's coming out party. For which she slapped my face.

LARRY
Ouch. She's got a brutal left hook.

GRAY
I could learn to love it.

Larry turns to him with a look of profound seriousness.

LARRY
Gray. I want you to promise me something. If I get killed over here, I want you to marry her and take care of her.

Gray looks at him comfortingly. He pats his shoulder.

GRAY
(earnestly)
Hey, stow that kind of jabber. We're non combatants. You're not going to get killed.

Larry bursts into a grin.

LARRY
I know. Just checking out your salivary glands.

They laugh. Rising, they continue down the street arm in ann, singing "The Madamoiselle From Amentierres".
